Youtube, aiming to court more content creators and influencers, announced a $100 million fund to pay content creators who make hit videos on its latest short-form video feature Shorts.
The fund will launch soon and will pay creators this year and 2022. This investment comes as platforms continue to attract young creators who are attracting significant followings and big earning potential by filming short comedy skits and dance routines. Popular app TikTok jump-started the trend of shot-form video clips and was later emulated by Facebook-owned Instagram Reels, Snapchat’s Spotlight, and Youtube Shorts.
Youtube will begin to test ads on Shorts as the market for short video features become more crowded and content creators start making videos for the platform. TikTok launched a creator fund in July and later increased its funding to $1 billion in the US for a three year span. Snapchat, on the other hand, awards $1 million per day to users who post top content on Spotlight.
